Advanced Editing Options in Quotes

Learn how to customise quote layouts beyond the standard options.

Written by Matt Govett

Overview

Advanced Editing allows you to make deeper customisations to your quotes beyond the standard options available in the quoted items section.

This can include:

  • Changing text and headings

  • Adjusting page structure

  • Creating columns

  • Changing heading sizes

  • Adding custom formatting using code

Advanced Editing is intended for users who want more control over their quote presentation and are comfortable making changes beyond the standard interface.

Accessing Advanced Editing

To access Advanced Editing:

  1. Open your quote.

  2. Navigate to the section you want to customise.

  3. Select Advanced Editing.

This will show the underlying code that controls how that section of your quote is displayed.

For example, the Terms & Conditions section can be customised by editing the heading name.

You can make simple changes such as:

  • Changing Terms & Conditions to Terms

  • Removing the heading entirely

  • Updating text displayed on the page

Changes will update immediately after saving.

Resetting Advanced Edits

If something goes wrong while editing, you can restore the default version.

Use the Reset option if:

  • The page no longer loads correctly

  • You receive an error message

  • Your changes have caused unexpected formatting issues

Resetting will return the section back to the default Buildxact code and layout.

Making More Advanced Changes

Advanced Editing can be used for more complex formatting changes, such as:

  • Creating two-column layouts

  • Changing heading sizes

  • Adjusting spacing and page structure

  • Adding custom formatting

A basic understanding of HTML and coding can be helpful, but tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, and other AI assistants can help create these changes.

For example, you can copy the existing code and ask an AI assistant:

"Make this into two columns"

The AI can then:

  1. Explain the changes required.

  2. Provide updated code.

  3. Help modify the layout.

When AI tools provide only a small snippet of code, it can be useful to ask:

"Provide the full code"

Then copy the updated code back into Advanced Editing and save.

Saving Changes and Reusing Layouts

Changes made through Advanced Editing are saved permanently to that estimate.

However, the changes are not saved as a reusable layout automatically.

If you want to use the same customisation repeatedly, you should either:

  • Build the changes into a quote template, or

  • Save the customised section as a layout that can be applied to future quotes

This prevents you from having to manually recreate the same changes each time.

Using the Quote Letter Command Cheat Sheet

When working with Advanced Editing, you can use placeholders to pull information from your Buildxact database.

At the bottom of the help article, there is a link to the Customizable Quote Letter Command Cheat Sheet.

This contains the available commands that can be inserted into your quote layouts.

For example, the Cover Page may contain placeholders such as:

  • Estimate description

  • Estimate works location

  • Client information

  • Business details

These placeholders automatically pull the relevant information from Buildxact.

Using AI With Quote Commands

AI tools can also help create custom quote layouts using these commands.

You can provide the command cheat sheet to an AI assistant and ask it to:

  • Use the available tags

  • Add specific information to your quote

  • Build custom sections or formatting

AI tools can be very helpful, but they may not always select the correct command.

An issue that sometimes occurs is it refers to the wrong source of the code as the tags are very similar.

Command cheat sheet is here:
